The Dream House
The Dream House
1981-1982. Oil on canvas. 30” x 30,” 36" framed.
This was my grandfather's favorite painting of mine. He bought the house in the painting in 1945 just after World War II. I updated the solid walnut frame recently by painting it white.
The Dream House was finished in 1982, when I painted it from memory. At this period of time, I was so excited about being an artist and had recently started painting outside (en plein air) like my artist heroes that I had looked up to from the 19th century, but this painting was done in the studio. I found that I really loved Impressionism and Post Impressionism, but wanted to also invent something really modern and original by myself.
This is one of my "Dot" paintings from 1982 and is a soft dreamlike portrait of an old Federal Era house that goes back to the late 1700's/Early 1800's. I first saw this place as a little baby and saw it over and over throughout my life. Over the years, it has changed somewhat and the house has been modernized as well, but this was painted as I remembered it from my youth. Several large Maple trees have grown up and now cover the front of the house. Upon inspection up close, "The Dream House" has a certain looseness and freedom of brushstrokes that makes it truly wonderful and ahead (or behind) its time.
